The Tathagata, also known as Shakyamuni Buddha, is the founder of Buddhism. Born in 563 BCE in the ancient Indian kingdom of Kapilavastu (present-day Nepal), he left his palace to seek the path to liberation from life's suffering. After six years of ascetic practice, he meditated under the Bodhi tree and attained enlightenment at the age of 35, becoming the "Enlightened One" or "Tathagata."Buddhism spread to China via the Silk Road between the 2nd and 1st centuries BCE. During the Wei, Jin, and Southern and Northern Dynasties, and the Tang Dynasty, Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism influenced and merged within Chinese culture, forming a unique religious and philosophical synthesis that also impacted neighboring countries like Japan and Korea. The round structures on the Tathagata's head are known as "spiral curls" or "snail-like curls," a feature in Buddhist art that symbolizes the Buddha's wisdom and divinity. | ||||||||
